Named the 36th manager in Tigers history on Oct. 4, 2005.
A veteran of 42 years in professional baseball, Leyland returns to the
organization that originally signed him as a catcher in 1963. Prior to his
appointment as the Tigers manager, he served for six seasons (2000-05) as a
major-league scout for the Cardinals. He previously served 14 seasons as a
manager at the major-league level with the Pirates (1986-96), Marlins
(1997-98) and Rockies (1999).
